I'm Going to FLORIDA Today!
This weekend is my BFF Meg’s bridal shower, so I’m heading to Jacksonville for some party time. I’m a little sad that it’s supposed to be cold there this weekend, but I can get over that because it can’t be as cold as it is here. (Oh, and Meg will be there!)

Vent Session: Incessant Chatter Edition
At work I sit in the back room with the other freelancers. A man sits directly to my left. He’s a nice guy and generally, I like him. There is one minor problem though, that this week has turned into a MAJOR problem. While he works away at his desk, changing files and designing things, he talks to himself. CONSTANTLY. And it’s not just talking. It’s cussing. He cusses out files,...

Same Kind of Different As Me: Book Review
Same Kind of Different as Me, Ron Hall & Denver Moore I have mentioned before that I am an avid reader, so I am continually looking for books that will inspire me, entertain me, make me laugh, make me cry and generally are a pleasure to read. This book is all of the above. I am not sure that my review will do justice to a book this moving and poetic, and I don’t want to say too much...

Bruised Knees & Wounded Dignity
My fabulous rainboots led me straight to my downfall. At the end of my day yesterday I was cleaning my desk off and decided to take two cups of water into the kitchen to empty them. As I stood up from my desk and turned to walk out of the freelance room, my stylish boot caught the corner of the desk. I thought that it could be salvaged, and I scrambled to get my other foot out to prevent a face plant. It didn't happen. It was one of those inner monologues that went a bit like this:
Ooh. Foot caught on desk. This can be salvaged. (Scrambles to get other foot in front.)
Oh. Oh no. This can't be salvaged.
Oh Sh*t. I'm going to fall. WHY AM I HOLDING 2 CUPS OF WATER?! NOW I CAN'T BLOCK MY FACE FROM HITTING THE GROUND! (Makes panicked eye contact with freelancer sitting next to me, who does nothing but watch, ambivalent, as I crash.)
AHHH! Maybe I can stick out my knee? Knee or nose, knee or nose... KNEE!
OH MY GOD. I think I broke my knee. Everyone is staring at me. I literally can't move my leg. Don't. Cry.
Seriously. Don't Cry. (Makes feeble attempt to laugh off the fact that I'm still sitting on the ground 2 minutes after falling. No, I'm fine, really. Don't get up to help me. It's okay. Ha. Ha.)
Okay. Get up. Pick up the cups, mop up the floor. (Limps into kitchen to get paper towels. Make jokes about clumsiness while stewing over the lack of chivalry in the office. Decides it's time to go home now.)
(Settling in at home after telling my roommate my tale of woe. We examine my knee, which is already purple. She sympathizes with me.)
This morning, hobbling to work in the clear light of day, my knee has a massive knot and my dignity is as purple as my bruised patella.

Congratulations to Cullens!
One of my favorite PC people is graduating today. In a few short hours, she signs off and will begin the terrifying process of finding employment. Frankly, she’s talented and smart, so I think she’ll be just fine. Anyways over two years of hard work led to this day, so enjoy it Melissa! You’ll be great!

Victory
This morning surprised me. Usually, I wake up before my alarm goes off, but today I didn’t. I was pretty disoriented by the time I scrambled out of bed and into the shower, but I was excited because it was raining. This may seem a bit odd, but I just got new rainboots and I was really happy to be able to wear them! I planned my outfit around them, grabbed my raincoat and umbrella, and...

Ish Smith Wreaks "Havoc" on UNC
After work last night I headed to the gym for a quick workout. As I was cruising along on my elliptical I was watching the Wake Forest/UNC basketball game. (It’s a great way to keep your intensity up when you are watching athletes tear it up on the court!) I’m pretty sure everyone around me was a bit confused when at random I would shout out in joy or frustration over the happenings of...

Simply Stunning
If Only I Knew Where to Begin, Angie Renfro I have admired this artist for about a year now, she has a brilliant way of conveying emotion in a still life that I find unique. Her uses of color and the way she applies paint are inspiring and lovely. If you’d like to see more of her work, you can view it here.

Kindling Affection?
I’m a reader. When I get to go on a vacation, I pack at least 3 books for a week long trip. I love getting into the stories of the characters, learning about new books from my friends (hey, Kath!) and I can spend hours in a bookstore. There is something about holding a book in your hands and flipping the pages that is incredibly satisfying. For Christmas, my lovely parents gave me the...

Pet Peeves (cigarette edition)
Let me begin by apologizing if you are a smoker. This is in no way meant to offend those of you who choose to smoke and is certainly not directed at any particular person. It is just something that bothers me. When you walk down the street in New York, or Atlanta, or Boston or any other city, there is something you will usually find in common with each one: cigarette butts. I understand the...

Seriously? It's just a chair.
So this morning I get to work and ask where I am sitting this week. Since I’m a freelancer, my desk changes week to week. The girl puts me in my seat and I set down my stuff and proceed to crank up the computer, log into my email, open up some files and get to work. About 5 minutes in, a woman comes in and sees me sitting and doing my work. She then proceeds to freak out at me and tell me in...

This is scary, right?
I seriously hope this is not another movie/tv show that glorifies teen pregnancy. It scares me how prominent this has become on tv – glee, secret life of an american teenager, etc. I realize that this is a real problem out there, but I think it’s more important toshow that it’s a problem and that it can be avoided rather than glorifying it. Am I crazy or do you agree? via partially...

I think I was gone too long.
I was away from New York for about 3.5 weeks for the holidays. Last night I took the train in from Boston and caught a cab back to my apartment with my two bags, laptop case and purse. I struggled through the door, said "hey" to the doorman and started down the hallway. That's when this conversation took place.
Doorman: Um, excuse me miss, can I help you?
Me: Oh, no, I'm good thanks (smiling).
Doorman: (follows me down the hall) Um, miss? Where are you going? (eyes me suspiciously)
Me: Um... to my apartment? 7L?
Doorman: (studies my face) Oh. Right. I didn't recognize you. Sorry about that. Have a nice night.
Me: Thanks... ha.. ha..

Seriously? Like, Really?
On Friday afternoon I got a phonecall from Meg, who was pretty upset. When she finally managed to get out what was upsetting her, this is what I got: “I mailed my wedding invitations to my mom in FL with UPS and someone STOLE THEM.” Apparently, a crooked UPS worker opened the box, called her folks and asked for the “return address” to the package so he could “give...

Ali, in the Bedroom, with the Floor Lamp
I got in bed last night pretty tired. Katie had gone to bed, and the apartment was dark and quiet. I had curled myself up and was just drifting off when I heard the door open and a man’s voice call out “Hellooo?” I froze. I didn’t think Katie’s boyfriend was stopping by, and so I was pretty upset. Frantically, I took a quick inventory of my room trying to locate the...

Ally & Ali
My sister gave me Season 1 of Ally McBeal for Christmas and I am starting it today. It’s set in Boston, so I think it’s appropriate that I begin watching it while I’m in Boston. I know it was extremely popular in the 90s, so I’m excited to see what the hype was all about.

An Open Letter to Nationwide Moving
Dear Nationwide, I regret to inform you that my experience with your moving company was less than enjoyable. I took the time to assist my boyfriend in his move from Atlanta to Boston this past week. It is unfortunate that your slogan reads, “Our goal is to make your move as worry-free as possible,” since the event was the exact opposite. The problems began in Atlanta, where you...

I'm Not in Georgia Anymore.
Dad: Hey Al, how's it going up in Boston?
Me: Oh, well, it's okay. But there is a lot of snow.
Dad: Yeah, I'm sure.
Me: I ended up knee deep in a snow drift!
Dad: How'd that happen?
Me: Well, I was trying to get out of Jack's car, and the snow had mountained up into this hill and I missed my footing and ended up in the middle of it.
Dad: Hahaha, Ali, you need to learn the terminology. The snow didn't "mountain" it drifted... You're really showing your southern roots here.
Ali: Whatever. It looked like a mountain.

Happy New Year, a bit late.
I took a nice long internet vacation over Christmas and New Years and I’m going to start easing myself back into the web world this week. Starting last Saturday, Jack and I drove from Atlanta to Boston to move him into his new apartment. The moving company gave us more than it’s share of headaches (more on that later) and hopefully the will be delivering Jack’s furniture today at...
